Portland & Vancouver homeowners:

Heating and cooling repair that starts with the fix

We fix what can be fixed — and tell you straight when it can't.

Quick answer

HVAC Repair Guys fixes home heating and cooling systems in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. We start with repair: a technician finds the cause, explains what it takes to fix it, and you approve the price before any work starts. If replacing makes more sense, we say so plainly and show you why.

Your house is cold, or hot, and you want two things: the problem fixed, and a straight answer about what it takes.

We start with repair. If a fix makes sense, we fix it. If it doesn't, we tell you why and show you the options. You decide.

Not sure what's wrong yet?

Start with the safe checks. Many problems are a setting, a breaker, or a filter.

What's your system doing?

Pick one. We'll show you what you can safely check first.

The system runs but blows cold air, or it won't turn on at all.

Check these first

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature.
  • Replace the thermostat batteries if the screen is blank or dim.
  • Check the breaker for the furnace or heat pump. Reset it once; if it trips again, leave it off.
  • Look at the air filter. A clogged filter can shut a furnace down.

When to get help: It still won't heat after these checks, or it keeps shutting off.

Repair or replace? You get a straight answer.

Old doesn't always mean replace. We look at what failed, what shape the rest of the system is in, and what a fix would really buy you. When the call is close, we lay out both options so you can compare.

Where we work

Common questions

What does HVAC Repair Guys do?

We repair home heating and cooling systems — gas furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, and ductless mini-splits — in the Portland and Vancouver area. When repair no longer makes sense, we explain why and help you compare replacement options.

What does repair-first mean?

It means we look for the fix before we talk about a new system. If a repair makes sense, we do it; if it doesn't, we tell you straight and show you why.

Will I know the cost before work starts?

Yes. We explain what's wrong and what it takes to fix it, and no work starts until you say yes.

What should I check before I call?

Check the thermostat mode and setpoint, thermostat batteries, the breaker, and the air filter. The problem pages list safe checks for each symptom.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away without using switches, phones, or flames inside. From outside, call 911 and NW Natural's 24-hour emergency line at 800-882-3377.

Do you work on both sides of the river?

Yes. We serve Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. The two states license contractors differently and have different incentive programs, which our service-area pages explain.
